Did you ever think about the 99 the shepherd leaves to search for the one?
In Scotland, sheep are painted with different colors and numbers. This allows the owner to quickly evaluate his herd.
There is a lot of comfort knowing that Jesus will leave 99 to find one who is lost. It’s easy to think, I’m secure in my faith. I don’t send Him on countless rescue missions….or do I?
When I worry -He calms my fears.
When I ask for more -He provides only what I need.
When I am broken – He heals.
The truth is, I am lost more often than I care to admit. The beautiful part of this story is God never gives up. He shows me every day He is willing to bring me back to the family of faith.
His actions say, you are valued, loved and worthy of rescue.
Because He carries me to the flock, I am secure.
And then it’s my turn to be Number 99 as the Loving Shepherd searches for the one. While I wait I pray for their safe return, understanding the pain of separation from His care.
If our faith was perfect, we wouldn’t be able to relate to someone seeking a better way, the path back to our Heavenly Father.
But we have the tools to say:
You are loved.
You are valuable.
You are worthy of countless rescue missions.
